Abstract:
A combination of mesoscale Eta model products, observations and high resolution satellite estimates of precipitation are employed to investigate the processes that conduct to the precipitation associated with the American monsoons. This approach is motivated because these systems span from continental to the smallest meso scales, and, thus, are not properly resolved by typical global analyses.
Several studies have also shown that GCMs have difficulties representing the diurnal cycle of precipitation. Consequently, models used for medium range forecasts, climate simulation, as well as for generation of global gridded data sets, may systematically misrepresent this basic element of summer precipitation. The problem is aggravated because the global analyses or simulations may give misleading information to identify the sources of moisture for the monsoon.
This talk will discuss the fundamental role of the diurnal cycle of mesoscale circulations in the development of precipitation over the monsoon regions. Of particular interest are the low-level jets that are typically associated to summertime precipitation.
