Global Numerical Weather Prediction at the Navy Research Laboratory

Abstract:

The Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) is the U. S. Department of Defense's high-resolution global weather prediction system. Its development and operation is a joint venture of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC). In addition to NOGAPS products that are used for operational medium-range weather prediction, NOGAPS fields are used to force and initialize a wide range of DOD's operational mesoscale, ocean, ice, and wave models. NOGAPS is also the backbone of the R&D program in predictability, physical parameterization studies, numerical methods, and coupled global modeling. A brief overview will be presented of the current research conducted at NRL in global modeling. In recent years several upgrades have been incorporated into the system, the most significant having been the introduction of the Emanuel cumulus parameterization scheme, the increase in horizontal and vertical resolution, and the 3-d variational analysis scheme NAVDAS. The impact of these past upgrades and recent results with mean orography and new gravity wave drag will presented. Finally some comparisons of various skill measures will be presented for NOGAPS and GFS.
